Now I am all confused! LOL  From my other thread I started about the Fire, someone mentioned the Nook color, so I started to research and NOW I am confused LOL

If you have either can you tell me what you like and don't like about it please :D  Or anything you have heard about either of them will work too.  I have done some research and it seems they are pretty comparable.  The Fire has less memory, but you can store in the "cloud" so it's actually not a deal breaker.

Anyone who has a Nook-what are the apps like?  Amazon's app store seems pretty user friendly and comparable to itunes.

We have a nook color, well ODS does, but I load some of my own books and knitting patterns and stuff to it. Afterall, he can't take it to school. I don't know much about the kindle fire so can't compare them. But we've been happy with it being able to read aloud to toddler child and there's alot of cool apps. D likes angry birds and the word of the day. I like sudoku and crosswords. We haven't some anywhere near maxing our memory and can always add a memory stick. All our books are in our BN account so we don't have to keep them on the nook itself if we're done with 'em. I like that we can borrow books from the library on it or be loaned books from a friend. ou can also go to BN and read books at the store for free. We had a friend do the hack for us so we can access the Kindle Library as well for anything that's not available on the nook. This was a selling point to us or rather g-pa who bought it.

i'm confused too! LOL And DH just told me to decide and winked at me....

How difficult is the hack? I mainly want it for some stuff for the kids, but the starmap/constellation app is #1 on my list. If i don't have that for an option i don't want it Tongue

Oh and not to hijack, but which one is better for pdfs? a LOT of my ebooks are in that format.

My mom has the Nook color and really likes it.  I have read books on it and played with it some.  I really like it.  The read aloud feature is pretty cool.  She has been very happy with it.

I even used it to pin. Embarrassed

The hack is a no-brainer from what I can tell.  You buy a n2a card online...I think even from Amazon...and insert it in the sd slot.  there's a way to hack it yourself without buying the card, but I think that's for people that really know what they're doing, which is not me.  I just bought my daughter a nook color and am considering the n2a card.

I chose the nook color for my daughter because i liked their selection of children's books better.  A lot of the kindles are audio for the early reader type children's books, and I wanted her to be able to read picture books herself, since she is in first grade and can read.  I'm sure now that the Amazon Kindle fire is in color, they probably will be upping their selection of picture books.

I know the card thing is perfectly legal and does not void your warranty.  Here is some info from pcmag.

reading PDFs on the kindle is a pain the buttocks.  I usually use calibre (on my PC) to convert my PDFs to kindle's format.

Also, I was wondering about the whole CS thing.  With a Nook you can take it to any B&N to get help, with the Kindle IDK what you would do??

Morgan, what exactly do you want to use the nook color or kindle for?  Read books, search internet, music, video, games?  That might help direct you towards one or the other.

What do I read that's in pdf format?  I can't remember anything right now.   some ebooks are (but not many...mostly free ones).  Calibre is a 3rd party thing (I downloaded it from their website...it's free).  It can do all sorts of fancy things.

All of the above kind of, but I don't expect it to be like a tablet YKWIM?  I read up on them and they aren't super great for searching the internet so that's not a biggie.  More for reading books, games and videos.  And music isn't necessary because I have an iPod :)

With the kindle, you can zoom in on the PDF so you can see it, but then you have to scroll side to side (AND down) to read everything.  just a pain.  I don't read PDFs w/o converting them as a result.  I have some schedules and things from church that are in PDF format...I deal with the hassle for those on the kindle if I need to read them and I'm not at my computer, but I wouldn't want to read a book that way, yk?

I have a kindle keyboard.  Not the Fire.

90% of the ebooks i have gotten from The Old Schoolhouse are in PDF form.

Becky, how does it change the format? What exactly is different about it?

It (the kindle) doesn't change the format - that's exactly the problem.  I doubt seriously that the nook would be much different, though.  So if you zoom it in far enough to be able to view the PDF, you also need to scroll side to side to read all of the words.  With a normal (non-pdf) ebook, if you zoom in the text, it just makes the text bigger and wraps the text nicely.  Like in a Word document, if you change the font from 8 point (tiny) to 12 point (plenty readable) it'll just wrap the text no problem.  a PDF is static...like a picture.  so if you zoom in on a picture, sometimes you have to scroll side to side to see the whole thing.  it doesn't wrap nicely.

Ooooh... so the program converts it so the text wraps? Does that mess up the format at all if there are pics or anything?

I've only read one book that had pics so far...they were whole page pics so I would just see a page w/ a pic and then the page would be my book again.  I do think that kids books are specifically formatted for the kindle (idk what picture books that are not made for the kindle would look like on it).

I got a nook tablet, i didn't like the reviews of the fire and i know ppl who have them and returned them due to the screen freezing up. my kids love that the books are in color and i can either read to them ,it can read them outloud or the kids can read on their own. so far the apps are really good.

I have a nook tablet for our classroom so far so good i recommend a screen protector for either kindle or nook. A touch pricey for essentially a sticker but with my 6 and 4 yr olds using it there are neither scores of scratches or fingerprints
