For ODS's halfie birthday I decided to give it a try and make him an explorer vest and bag
They are much easier than I thought they would be and I have 1 done already - YAY!!They are not perfect, but for 4 and 5 year old's they will work great I ran out of material so I only got 2 smaller pockets on the front of the vest. Making the 3 dimensional pockets was a lot simpler than I thought it would be too. ODS things they are great, so that is all that matters. I also tweaked the bag pattern a bit so I didn't have to use bias tape. I sewed them together inside out and then turned and top stitched around the top edge so that it is a finished edge with out the extra work. I also didn't use as stiff of a fabric so it is more "floppy" and not as sturdy as the ones in the picture. It is a really nice finished size - not too big but just the right size. I am going to make each bag/vest different fabrics so after I am done ODS is going to pick which one he wants. I am also making one for DD because she can't be without a bag too. Hard to tell in the picture but the bag top is folded over in the picture so that is the finished size with the flap over. The print on the outside of the bag is are the exterior pockets

Linda - they are each getting a bag and vest and in the bag will be...
compass whistle note pad pencils binoculars water bottle markers bandanna - for wiping off/cleaning up their treasures stiff bristle paint brush - for getting the dirt off the "bones" and then I am going to bury a dinosaur puzzle (the 3-D wood kind) for each of the 3 boys and give them a map to find theirs and then they will have to put them together. They are all dollar store type things - the binoculars and whistle - so even though there are lot of things it was still pretty inexpensive. |

The last 2 sets + a bag for DD
This set made me laugh (what else could I do?) somehow I cut the vest wonky so I had to add trip at the bottom because it was too short to hem, but I didn't have enough of the stripe in a length so I had to sew piece together so the print changes. I don't know why the pocket on the side is so tall, but ODS was so excited and said "Look I can put my pencil in there" so I think he has claimed the funky blue vest and bag.  Bag and vest - #3  bag for DD - she did not want a vest  |

This is the first time I have ever done a party - other than a play group. DH told me "what are you going to do next year since you started out so big"  I would not have done it if I had not enjoyed the projects. They were simple and fun so to me didn't feel that involved. |
