Hello. I am new to this forum and to the world of cloth diapering and I was just looking for some advice. I am expecting my first child this summer and have been doing a lot of research as to which cloth diapers to use. I know I want to stick to natural fabrics, have a system that is economical and practical, and make sure that it is effective. I was thinking of starting off by ordering a dozen each of the flats and prefolds from GMD and maybe a dozen or so of their fitted workhorse diapers, a few variety of covers, and some wipes. Does this sound like a good idea or should I just pick one and go with that? Also, do flats have to be prepped in the same way that prefolds do? And as far as doublers go, at what age do you generally have to start using those? Thanks in advance - I know a lot of cloth diapering is trial and error and depends a lot on my baby, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

That is a great idea!! Flats, Prefolds and prefitteds (which are workhorse) are great for a new born and up
Pair them with some good covers and you will be set!! I used PF's on my youngest, but actually found that I preferred flats for him.PF's need to be washed/dried 4-5 times to really get absorbent and fluffy. With my flats I just wash and dry once and start to use. NB's pee alot! It always surprises me So I was changing every 1.5 - 2 hours. Around the age of 8 weeks I started to use a NB or Preemie PF as a doubler in flats, PF's and fitteds and it worked great. I also started to use them with they started to sleep in longer stretches at night, but not pooping all the time, so I didn't have to change as often.Welcome to the Pin and Congratulations!! |

I think a dozen each of flats, prefolds, and workhorses sounds pretty perfect to me. You can't go wrong with any of those things from GMD and you can try out all of them and see what you really like. I started with GMD prefolds, but now love flats and Workhorses (and Mother-ease fitteds, too). Grab about 8 or so covers, snappis, and wipes and you'll be really set.
Like Sarah said, newborns are tiny pee factories. I hightly reccomend GMD's Cloth-eez (or maybe they are called Workhorse) doublers in the small size. I also like their sherpa doublers. They can come in so handy and give your diapers a little boost without adding much bulk at all. I love them! I also like using fleece liners. My baby has sensitive skin and fleece liners have been a life saver here. You can either buy them from GMD, but you can also make your own from cheap fleece. Congrats and welcome! It sounds like you are on your way to a really nice stash. |

I like to boil my diapers to prep. I have washed prefolds 8 times and still had them repel on me. Same with flats. I boil a few at a time for 15 minutes each with a squirt of Dawn and then put them through a couple hot washes to rinse all the soap out. I'll dry them once and they are ready to go.
You can start using doublers whenever really. GMD's Cloth-eez/Workhorse and sherpa doublers are really trim. Premie prefolds are a nice option, too. But they are a little bigger/thicker than the others. I still use them and my DS is a year old. My sister is borrowing my NB Workhorses and adds a small GMD doubler for my 6 week old niece. She is just starting to outgrow the rise. Edited by Clare_S - 31 Mar 2012 at 6:17pm |

Thanks for all the replies. What about stay dry liners? Do you find these helpful for use at night so the baby sleeps longer without needing to be changed?

Welcome to the pin!
For stay dry doubler/liners I like to use fleece liners(I have some from GMD and bummis), also hemp/fleece doublers (GMD), and wool liners from babee greens. |

My boys never needed a stay dry liner/doubler to sleep longer. They got up several times through the night like a regular newborn, regardless of what was on their bum. I did stop changing them at night once they stopped pooing with every change. That maybe happened around 2 or 3 month old.

Sounds like a nice stash to start with. Stay dry doublers or liners keep baby butt drier than non stay dry. It helps sensitive skin by letting moisture pass through (fleece or suede cloth) and absorb into the diaper and it acts as a barrier to that moisture. Its also super easy to get poop off of once they are eating solids. Now, Emily Jane has very sensitive skin but I don't usually use a stay dry liner, I just change as soon as she is wet.

here's my new dilema - go for the orange edge newborn prefolds or go straight to the yellow edge small? It would be nice to be able to wait and see what size the baby actually is before making the decision, but I want to be able to order everything and have the diapers prepped and ready to use when the baby arrives. I know they are not supper expensive, but I have been reading about a lot a babies that were only in the nb prefolds for 2 or 3 weeks. I am also not quite sure how I feel about buying used diapers. TIA

I think you will want the orange. Yellows would be really big on newborn. I needed yellow edge on C, but he was10.5 lbs at birth

Hey there! This is perfect. I'm expecting my first in September and I want to put some cloth diapers on my registry. I was planning on going with just prefolds but after reading this I think I will try some of each type.
My question is covers. Any recommendations on which brands are the best for your buck? I'd like to get a few that will "grow", but am happy to also get a few that are fitted. Also, should I put various different sizes on my registry. Or just go with newborn and small and then buy them as I go? Thanks! |

I think some of the best covers for getting the most bang out of your buck are Thirsties Duo Wraps. Size 1 will fit from day 1 until upwards of a year. You can get even more life out of them if you use them over trifolded prefolds or padfolded flats when they are too small to use over fastened diapers. I highly reccomend registering for NB/small sizes. Try several different brands and you'll soon learn what you like. Then, go from there. Good luck! |

For covers, I'd recommend the two-size versions. Both Thirsties and Swaddlebees now use a two-size system. It allows more customization than a standard one-size but is still very economical than the old four-size systems (newborn, small, medium, large). So that's Thirsties Duo Wraps and Swaddlebee's Capris. If you like the sized versions better, I like Bummi's Super Brites and Bummi's Super Whisper Wraps.

Rumparooz also has a newborn cover that is somewhat adjustable and their one size cover goes a long way in terms of adjustability.

Definitely get a variety, because you don't know what you will like and what will work for you until you try it all. I think you have the right idea though.

buying pre-owned cloth diapers: it is easier to buy used diaper covers and feel ok as a newbie to CDing. but you can also find great deals on VERY GENTLY USED diapers, just be thorough in asking Qs and looking at pic- unfortunately some mama's try out cloth diapering and don't like it, i feel ok buying if they have good feedback or if i can see diapers firsthand. if you do try used cloth diapers, always look carefully before you buy. and know what you're looking at beforehand if possible (check out a local cloth diaper store or a cloth diaper trial).

i also have to admit: i now love sized diapers and covers MORE b/c i can avoid the snaps rise that rub on my chunky monkey's thighs (we mainly use baby legs at home, only pants when we go out). thirsties duo sz 1 are great b/c babies are still mostly immobile. but as they get crawling and walking, it works for me to have a handful of mediums (which are suppose to last the longest of all covers) and a couple larges (great nighttime cover for more bulky diapers).
also, velcro vs snaps: at 11 mos, my LO will watch me intently as he carefully unvelcros his hook/loop diapers/covers. hopefully, they will grow past this stage, but i mostly have snaps, and keep only a couple of velcro for emergency, quick changes.

my fav sized diaper cover: velcro- bummis, snaps- tiny tush and motherease. all the covers are generous sizing for snappi'd prefolds/flats, even fitteds.
my fav OS diaper cover: flip, b/c of the extra front/back flaps that help keep padfolded flats/prefolds in place.

go with a newborn trial if you'd like to not worry about reselling (google- there are a variety out there), but if you plan to have more kids, investing in a newborn stash is worth it, esp b/c newborn prefolds and small flats are GREAT doublers as the babe gets bigger.
