We rarely go out to the cinema but we like to rent and record movies on cable a lot. I've seen quite some lately that I really like (some older, some newer).... I'll come back and list them...

What movies have you seen lately?

What kind of movies do you like?  I have been watching old dumb teen romantic comedies lately just to relive my youth (HA) but I saw one on netflix that really suprised me because it wasn't at all what I thought it would be.  The description and the pic they have up are very misleading.  It is called Waiting for Forever and stars Rachel Bilson.  I think it is a pretty polarizing movie but I was pleasantly suprised with the acting and with the story.  It is a romantic comedy but one with some serious and tragic themes so pretty different.  If you like quirky movies you might take a look.

In the sci-fi vein I just bought Gattaca, one of my favorite non-blockbuster success sci-fi movies.  You have probably already seen it but if you haven't you should watch it.  Or watch it again like I probably will in a week or two. Tongue

I have mostly been watching old tv series so no other movies to suggest at the moment.

New ones...we just went to Chronicle. It was ok. I think DH liked it more than I did even though we are both suckers for super hero movies. This isn't super hero though, just kids with powers. First, the main character is annoying...I hate whiney, woe-is-me teens. Second, it was filmed like it was a personal camera. Think Blair Witch or Paranormal Activity. That was ok, except that there were a lot of slow-ish parts. I would say wait for it on Netflix or even good old cable. I don't think I would even pay $1 for it at Redbox.

Our fairly recent Redboxes have been...
Moneyball
Hangover 2
Pirates 4
Bridesmaids

I borrowed The Help from my parents. I just got The Ides of March from them today.

I've been watching some on Netflix streaming, too. Most of them have been less than ok lol. Some have been good though. I bet you can figure out which are which.
True Grit
Take Me Home Tonight
Swingers
Brokeback Mountain
Tristan & Isolde
Paranormal Activity 2
Blithe Spirit
Year of the Dog
Gnomeo & Juliet
The Last Song
The Code
No Strings Attached
Morning Glory

well, not overaly new, but loved Water for Elephants!  i read the book first, which i enjoyed, but surprisingly i still really like the movie ('cause usually after you read a book, the movie adaptations are so often a let down).  but i almost like the movie better, honestly.  of course, i love reese witherspoon and um, i forget the lead guys name, but he was pretty good looking, so that helped a lot, too!  lol

Hmmm haven't seen Water for Elephants. I need to look that one up.

Here's what we've seen in the past few months -

  • Moneyball
  • Bridesmaids
  • Black Swan
  • Real Steele
  • Contagion
  • Adjustment Bureau
  • I Don't Know how she doesn't (Don't bother!)
  • Hereafter (Ever notice that Matt Damon does about 3 or 4 movies a year? What's up with that?)

There are more but I can't think of them right now...

It's always a struggle finding movies that the whole family could watch... I have a teenage DD and DS..Ugh.... Anyway we recently saw

  • Princess Bride
  • Dead Poet Society (I can't believe I hadn't seen this before this year...awesome movie).

I really want to see Ides of March -

I'd love to watch The Help. It's on my wish list.....

I don't know a lot on that list..... I guess you don't recommend them?

I'm no help on the movies, but I just thought I'd say that the Studebaker Avanti that is in Gattaca belonged to my husband's grandfather.  They rented it from him for the movie.  Cool

Reading this makes me realize I have not seen a movie in a looooong time even rented We used to watch movies a lot before kids, but now between bedtime for the kids and bedtime for me, there doesn't seem to be time.

When I listed those I realized how many we do watch! Our kids our older  so we are out of that bedtime stage - until just a couple of years ago I spent at least an hour reading with each child....mostly for one on one time...

True Grit was really good. I recommend it.
Broke back Mountain was good, too, though it was a little long IMO.
Blithe Spirit is an old b&w. It's a cute rom com.
Take Me Home Tonight was horrible. No Strings Attached was also a let down. I'd definitely skip those. The others were all ok. I wouldn't necessarily recommend them, but they weren't awful. More of a meh, shrug type thing if that makes sense.

True Grit - HATED it. It really sucked big time compared to the original. I grew up with John Wayne movies though, so no one can compare these days.

Breaking Dawn - um...AWESOME! I was very pleased, they just keep getting better!

Must Love Dogs - typical romantic comedy, not very good.

GI Joe - Wonderful!! I never watched the original cartoon GI Joes but this one was amazing. Channing Tatum does a fantastic job playing him and there isn't a bunch of sex to cloud the real theme of the movie.

Courageous - Once again, another AMAZING movie. Theme was fantastic, it was funny and entertaining, but, as always, these 'B' movies leave some acting to be desired. Other than some goofy acting, the plot was great and really touched me and my husband. (Same movie makers as Fireproof and Facing the Giants)

I haven't seen a lot of movies lately, but here's my list of the few I've seen:

Warrior - I actually liked this one, but DH and I are huge MMA fans who never get to watch fights anymore, and we may have just been a little starved for whatever we could get.

True Grit - I really liked; DH is a huge JW fan and didn't like it as well as the original, but he did still enjoy it.

Dolphin Tale - cute, heartwarming... not really my thing, but I do love Harry Jr.

Don't Know How She Does It- I was bored, but I was pleasantly surprised at the ending. I was dreading the affair that didn't happen-- thank goodness.

Breaking Dawn - liked, but didn't love.

Muppets- ugh. I thought it was horrible. But to be fair, it may have just been my kids' horrible behavior during the movie that I hated because the only part I enjoyed was when DH took DS to the bathroom.

Smurfs- just OK

Abduction - I really liked this one. It didn't get very good reviews, but I thought it was entertaining. I saw it twice (once on a GNO with my gf and once with DH) and enjoyed it both times.

Super excited to go to the dollar theater this weekend for a Sherlock Holmes date with DH!

ETA: forgot a few

I watched Dolphin Tale the other day. It was so good. I almost cried about 10 times. It is so heartwarming, encouraging, hopeful. I would watch it anytime.

DS and I also watched Cars 2. It seemed to be geared older than the first. DS clearly wasn't getting as much of the storyline. I thought it was great though. It needs to be added to my Disney collection...yes, MY collection.

Ides of March
Man on a Ledge
The Descendants

All great. I was really, really, really impressed by The Ides of March. Very well written, very well acted.

Hubby and I also mostly watch TV series that we torrent. We just finished Star Trek The Next Generation (yep, we are geeks), we're working on Newsradio now and Night Court is all ready to go once were done with that.
I'm downloading all the old Law and Orders....I loved the first 5 seasons of it. It's going to be a few weeks before it's done though.

I am on the waiting list for The Help at our Library.  I read the book a while back.

I am wanting to see The Vow, but have no clue if it is even out yet.

We took everyone to see the 3D Star Wars this week.  I love Star Wars (the original 3 are my fave) and DH is a Star Wars geek.  The kids love it too.  We've been watching them @ home in order and are through the 4th one.

Selah, The Vow came out in theaters on Feb 14th, but it isn't out on DVD yet.

I loved The Help and True Grit! We just watched Ironman (getting ready for The Avengers :)) and I was surprised at how much I liked it. The last movie we saw in theaters was Red Tails and it was good... not great, but good. Some other movies we watched recently that we liked were: The Adjustment Bureau, Contagion and The King's Speech (loved that one!). We just finished the first season of NCIS and are working our way through it, we get those DVDs in between the others on our Netflix.

We just took the kids Sat night to see "We bought a zoo" at the $2 theater.  I enjoyed it but wish I had read some reviews first b/C it was not exactly a kid friendly movie as I thought it would be
