I have been only researching cloth diapers for a couple of months now and am having a hard time figuring out what I should try. I know what pre-folds we are going to order. We want to try a variety of pocket diapers probably OS. The issue is the more I read and research the longer my list of brands I want to try gets (I think I'm up to 4 different kinds and baby won't be here until May). There just seem to be so many good kinds out there for a variety of reasons. How do you possibly narrow down your choices? I am sure after we CD for a while I'll come across even more diapers I will want to try. I haven't even begun to research covers......I'm scared as to long long the list will become then. Any suggestions? How many different kinds should I limit myself to in my first stash?

Ain't this the truth! There really are a lot of great things out there!
I would just say do the research and then start slow. Maybe don't buy multiples of anything (other than your prefolds) until you've tried a diaper. Honestly I have quite a variety of diapers in my stash now and I really like them all. I have a lot of OS and some actually fit my son better when he was smaller, but the ones I didn't like as much then are working wonderfully now. And kids do come in all different shapes and sizes, so what works well for one child might not be so great on another. Once you're baby is here you'll have a better idea of their build and you can try to find a diaper that suits that body type.

Anyway you'll need a couple of diapers, so get some different types and you can try what works best for you!
You could get:
- 5 flats
- 10 prefolds
- 5 fitteds
- 5 pockets
- 3 AIOs
and
- 2 PUL cover
- 1 microfiber cover
- 2 wool soaker
- 1 pair of wool longies

Many families find themselves in your situation and end up getting a sampler pack or 2. Another option is to buy some used diapers to try until you are settled on what you like best and what works for you and your baby. Even if you decide what you want before baby arrives, you may find out later that it just isn't quite right.
As long as you have some prefolds or flats to get you started during the NB stage (3 mos or so), you can wait explore you other options when baby is into the Med size. Ha vve fun searching and shopping! ![]() |

Some companies have "try it out" packages, so you can try a variety of styles/brands, and only keep what you like.

We started with a "try it" package (prefolds, bummis, and snappi) and I thought it was great. It wasn't even enough to get us through a full 24 hours but it really gives you a better idea what your getting into. I have been impressed with how easy and economical prefolds are compared to some fancier options. Definitely start slow. Some things I thought I'd love, really don't care for and so glad I didn't buy any more, it would have been a waste of money. Which isn't to say those other options aren't good but there are so many and they can get expensive.

Thank you everyone for you help thus far. I'm going to visit a local baby store that just opened that carries some CD.....yeah!!! I'm really excited that we now have a store close by that I can actually see and feel some different options. Hopefully that will help us with some of our decisions. Plus we'll be able to buy some different things locally to try before we have to order a sampler or try it out package.
