Last week the commissary had a sale on Cascadian Farms (owned by General Mills) frozen berries. There were also coupons on the shelf so they ended up being $1 a bag. I bought 20 to use in oatmeal and ice cream. I was getting out a bag of strawberries yesterday and noticed that the bag is stamped "product of China". What the heck?? How can they be sure they are organic in China and how would that even be possible given the huge amount of pollution in China? I googled it and found that most all of their frozen fruits and veggies are grown in China under these questionable conditions. DH and I have gone 99% organic and Cascadian Farms is our only source for frozen fruit and veggies without driving 100 miles away. I'm so disappointed in General Mills.

Hmm, I buy quite a few Cascadian Farms products for DS. I thought they were local for me and everything was grown right on their farm. Yikes!

Just today, I went to get some all natural- freeze dried fruits, and they are made in China. Plus, we have these little organic fruit snacks called "Florida's Natural" and they are made in China! It frustrates me too!

Were the freeze-dried fruits brothers all natural? I bought some online a few months ago because the company is in a small town in western ny near where I grew up and since they are apples and lots of apples are grown in that area I just assumed the apples were local to that area but they were from China. |

I wrote the company an email because I bought four 12-packs from them and they never responded. I was miffed. For freeze-dried fruit I now buy mountain house. They are organic (I think they have conventional as well) and are sold in blue pouches in sporting goods stores for camping/backpacking. The pieces are smaller but the kids don't mind them although I like the size of the brother's ones better. The only ingredients the company buys for any of its products that are from China are a few spices for their dinner entrees. |

This just boiled my blood over it again so I sent them another email:
A couple months ago I purchased four 12-packs. Two apple, one asian pear, and one peach. We have been eating them but still have fifteen or so of the packages left. I purchased your product because I grew up in Rochester and wanted fruit that was local to that area so when I found a company in Batavia, in the middle of apple country, that was selling a wholesome snack I stocked up. When eating a package of the apple variety I noticed that on the back, in really tiny print, were the words "product of China". I was really disappointed. Why use apples from the other side of the world when there are millions of them growing right in your own backyard? I do not trust produce or any food product from China and try to not purchase anything produced there, foodstuff or otherwise. I feel that your company is not being up front about where your product was made and that is dishonest and is taking advantage of consumers who have no way of knowing the product origin when ordering via the internet. Had I known your product is made in China I would not have bought it, plain and simple. I am writing to request a refund. I will be happy to return the unused product. Please let me know where and to whom the uneaten packages should be shipped. Thank you, my name |

Yuck. No, I don't trust any food that comes out of China. Good for you for writing to the company - I think more people should complain.
I had no idea Cascadian Farms had been bought out. Disappointing. BTW, Trader Joe's no longer gets any of their food from China, but you might be quite a ways from one of their stores. |

They must get lots of complaints about it since they sent back a form letter. It says that the product is freeze-dried in China but the apples are sourced from all over the world! So much for trying to buy somewhat local, it's getting hard to buy US. They claim that the US does not have enough freeze-drying facilities and that they 'oversee quality control' in the Chinese plant. They did say I could return the uneaten packages for a refund, which I will be doing. I guess what bothers me the most is that there was no way of knowing that these were not made in the US from their website. It was only after I had them that I could see the tiny "product of China" on the back of the individual packages. At least the Cascadian Farms berries had it stamped right on there in a reasonable sized print, I just didn't take the time to look.

I hear ya! My husband and I watched the move, "Food, Inc." last night and I learned that many of the natural/organic companies have been purchased by food giants in the industry and then produce items under circumstances that are questionable. I'm disgusted that so many of the names I have trusted can no longer be trusted!!
