My son has never had a rash, but we still use it before his bedtime diaper for prevention. I'm dubious about the smell, its kind of harsh and weird but yet I can't say I hate it. Its really oily and hard to get off your hands. We have used it a lot to battle cradle cap, and it has worked wonderfully! I have to give a 3 because it has petroleum, which I'm really not pleased with, since it claims to be so ""natural.""

It does smell great, I'll give it that. The active ingredients are petrolatum and lanolin, and I'd heard that both these substances cause repelling with cloth diapers. I decided to try it nonetheless because it advertises as CD-safe. Within a month we were having serious repelling issues. Also, the tube is so small for such a high price, and it squeezes out quite a bit so it goes fast. I wanted to like this ointment very much, so I'm sad to leave a less-than-satisfied review.

DS is very sensitive to certain foods in my diet which results in him getting a diaper rash. I've been looking for a diaper rash ointment that's CD safe. So far, i haven't had any staining or issues with my diapers. The ointment works well and clears up DS' rash within about 24hours. There is a strong scent, but it doesn't bother me any and I kind of like it. I'm pleased with this product and have recommended it to other moms.

I'm not a fan. It didn't clear up my son's rash at all. I also find the scent very strong and unpleasant. DH doesn't like it at all because it's hard to wash off of your hands and leaves your hands feeling sticky. I'm still on the search for my perfect CD-friendly rash salve.

My daughter had some redness after wearing sposies for a few days, and this product greatly helped her heal.
Other reviews (here and elsewhere) comment on the light pleasant smell. Unfortunately, I think it has a very strong odor and an unpleasant one. I can smell it on my hands after several washings. It works, I just can't stand the scent of it.

Great oitnment.
My son never ever had a rash. I understand though that he has not a sensitive skin either.
Stains the diaper a bit.
Now I'm using the northern essence and like better because is: cheaper and easier to aply (roll up). Too early to tell if this one stains as well...

Fantastic diaper cream! It removed my baby's diaper rash within hours and I love the fact that I can safely use it with my prefolds.

My LO has been suffering with a terrible diaper rash for about a month. I tried taking her out of cloth and using disposables, I tried a million different commercial diaper creams and a several different natural diaper creams but this is the only one that has made a significant difference in helping her not only heal, but prevent any further rash from showing up. It's amazing and I love it. I highly recommend to anyone. Awesome product.

My newborn recently had 3 bouts of bad rashes, and I bought this stuff to try last. I WISH I bought it first!
I had tried the usual zinc stuff and set aside diapers to use with it, so they wouldn't mess up the rest of my stash. It didn't work.
I bought Northern Essence, Magic Stick, and California Baby diaper ointments based on reviews here, plus recommendations on remedies that were safe to use on cloth diapers from pinstripes and polkadots.com. They were o.k., but none cleared up the rash as fast as Grandma El's!
In all instances, I would wrap ds loosely or let him air out as long as possible.
Grandma El's beats everything I've tried beforehand, it smells nice, and you don't need to smear a lot on for it to work fast! The only thing I didn't like was that I had to order the big size online. They only carried the 2oz in the store, so I waited to order until I had a coupon and free shipping on the website so that I could save $$$.
