How To - pad fold a flat

This is how I fold a flat for pad folding... I am pretty particular in how I do it so that it's easier to just grab and go, knowing that it will fit right. When you have not-quite-square flats it makes a difference on how you fold it - do you want a long and skinny pad, or a short and wide one? Me, personally, I go for short and wide so there is more padding between the legs and no fabric peeking out of the top of the cover.

OK, so you have your flat all laid out... this is either a LL or an older GMD - either way, as you can see, it's a slight rectangle (the new GMD meds I have noticed are much closer to a square)

Fold over once (I have kept the flat in the same position to make things easier to keep up with... no rotating or anything)

Fold up the bottom edge to the top to make a "square" (it's now in quarters). It's hard to see, but this is where I off set the top seams so that there is less bulk in the cover. When I folded it up, I left it about 1" shy from lining up with the top edge. I'm tired, hopefully that makes sense

Here's a closer up shot of the top edge. I stuck a birthday card in there to hopefully better show the edges...

Then tri fold it like you would a PF... I put the open edge in just in case there is poo so it won't infiltrate so many layers.

Fold over the other side.

If my calculations are correct, there are 12 layers throughout. I put it in the cover with all the folds underneath so there is less to deal with if she does poop. With a snug fitting cover it is sooo trim, and super easy!

I really hope that makes sense... I'm not normally the best at explaining things so forgive me if I have confused anyone even more. Let me know if I need to clarify anything!

Flats in various covers

Here's a side by side comparison of the old GMD/LL next to the new med GMD. They aer similar in size, but the new ones are more square so that adds some length. It's not much, but it does make a difference when you're just laying it in a cover - a much closer fit for sure! The pictures below are of the smaller one on the left since most people probably own that size.

Medium Bummis Super Brite

Flip on medium setting

Wonder Wrap on last snap setting... this one is really hard to photograph since it's sooooo stretchy! There also aren't any flaps or pockets to tuck the flat into, but it's snug enough of a fit that doesn't seem to matter (unless you're trying to take a pic)

Medium Bummis Super Whisper Wrap

© 2011, May not be copied or reprinted without permission.

About the Author:

Cloth Diaper Enthusiasts preparing to set Earth Friendly World Record

February 16, 2011 – Cloth diapers have come a long way in the past ten years. An event, called the Great Cloth Diaper Change 2011, already creating buzz not only in North America, but all over the world, will take place on Saturday, April 23, 2011 in locations all around the globe. The Great Cloth Diaper Change (http://www.greatclothdiaperchange.com) will set a world record for the most cloth diapers ever changed simultaneously.

Parents, child birth educators, lactation consultants, pediatricians and environmentally responsible businesses agree that it is not environmentally or financially justified to continue sending billions of disposable diapers to landfills every year where it will take hundreds of years for them to decompose. Heather McNamara, of the Real Diaper Association, says that “our local volunteers are finding growing numbers of parents coming to find out about cloth diapers, whether it be for environmental, financial, or health reasons - - or even because these diapers are just plain cute!” It is the hope of the organizers that this event will be an eye opener and an inspiration for expecting and new parents to use cloth diapers, a more planet friendly alternative that also saves parents substantial money.

Help set a Guinness World Record™! Follow the challenge on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/GreatClothDiaperChange and Twitter www.twitter.com/ClothRecord and, for frequent updates, greatclothdiaperchange.com.

Date and Time is Saturday, April 23 at 9AM Pacific / 12PM Eastern ‐ which means that on a global level some CD enthusiasts will gather and do the diaper change in the middle of the night. Exact information is available on a local level so that all participants, no matter where they live, can find the appropriate location and time.

A multitude of locations will be available for families all over the U.S and around the globe, across the ocean, in Europe, Australia, and the list keeps growing. Parents, care givers, educators, retailers, playgroups, day care centers – anybody can apply to become an organizer and host a location.

Each group/location will have a minimum of 25 participants to count for the record. Each local event will be unique, with many hosts planning fun family activities for parents, friends and older siblings, leading up to the specific “change” time. You won't want to miss the local action in your town! Organizers are eager to be a part of setting a Guinness World Record and letting the world know that cloth diapering rocks. Find a location near you.

This event is part of a larger (and growing) movement. Participants may contribute $1 (or more) at all North American events to benefit the Real Diaper Association, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to help families across the U.S. and Canada find and use reusable cloth diapers.

# # #

How it all started
The Great Cloth Diaper Change 2011 was initially the brain child of Judy Aagard of Tiny Tots in California, as a way to show our country and the world that cloth diapers are a real option for today’s families. After initial contacts with Guinness World Records™ she saw the potential to help further enhance the cloth diapering movement, while setting a world record. The response has been above and beyond expectations. It is evident that cloth diapering has a formidable following not just in North America, but truly around the world. What better way to celebrate Earth Day 2011?
