Below is the breakdown of the cost for washing diapers in the Diaper Pin household. There are many factors that change from home to home that we have detailed below. Refer to the list so you can intelligently adjust our numbers to match your methods.

Liquid Detergent - All Free And Clear

Since our children have sensitive skin we use doctor recommended All Free And Clear. This is best for diapers since they do not have added fragrances.

  • 1/2 cup of detergent per wash = 74.88 washings per 2.34 gallon container.
  • 2.34 gallons container of All Free and Clear costs us $10.99.
  • $10.99 / 74.88 = $0.147 per load

+ $0.147

Baking Soda (generic brand)

We use approximately 1/2 cup of baking soda in our cold water soak and another 1/2 cup during the hot wash totaling 1 cup of baking soda per wash.

  • 1 cup of baking soda per wash = 4.3 washings 2 pound box.
  • 1 2lb(32oz) box of baking soda costs $0.79
  • $0.79 / 4.3 = $0.184 per load

+ $0.184

Vinegar (generic brand)

We use 1/2 cup of vinegar in the first rinse. We do not add anything to the second rinse.

  • 1 cup of vinegar = 32 washings 1 gallon container.
  • A 1 gallon container of vinegar costs $1.49
  • $1.49 / 32 = $0.0466 per load

+ $0.0466
Cost of cleansers used per Wash
  • $0.147 + $0.184 + 0.0466 = $0.37
= $0.3776
Total # of Diapers per Wash
  • We wash anywhere from 24 to 30 diapers per wash - an average of 28 diapers per wash.
divided by 28
Cost of cleansers used per Diaper
  • $0.37 / 28 = $0.013
= $0.013

Factors that affect diaper calculations:
  • different washing methods (wet pail vs. dry pail, soak vs. no soak)
  • drying methods (machine dry vs. air dry)
  • cost of heat, water and electricity (electric powered dryer vs. gas powered dryer, coin operated machines)
  • capacity and efficiency of washer and dryers
Our numbers were based on these methods:
  • All washes included doublers and liners (used mostly at night-time) we did not itemize this in our estimates.
  • washing: wet pail, soak, hot wash, extra rinse.
  • drying methods: mostly air dry and occasional machine dry.
  • energy: our dryer is powered by gas and electricity
  • capacity and efficiency: extra large capacity Kenmore washer. The dryer is Whirlpool. Both machines are 5 years old. Diaper Pin washes between 25 to 30 diapers per load.
