Jessica Burman has many accomplishments in which she takes pride.
She made it through army basic training and finished at the top of her class.
She completed a difficult labor while giving birth to her first son.
She also created a new diapering system, and to this day, keeps up the success with help from her mom.
Still, the accomplishments she treasures are not her own; they are the first smiles, first kisses, and first steps of her children that are the biggest rewards of her life.
How many children do you have and what are their ages? Please tell us something about each child.
I have 3 children. Anthony is 7, Angelie is 3, and Andy is 1
Anthony's favorite subject is art; he is very creative. He is a great helper at home.
Angelie is our little girl. She is a girly girl all the way down to her painted toes! She is extremely silly!
Andy is our baby. At 15 months he is a very happy little boy, always on the go and into everything. He is so affectionate and gives the best little kisses.
What is a funny or rewarding experience you've had as a mama?
Being able to stay home with my children and see them grow each day has been the most rewarding experience. Being the recipient of the first smiles, the first kisses and seeing the first steps is the best reward in life.
What did you think you'd be when you grew up?
A mom. I always wanted to be a mom because I loved babies. I never really knew what I wanted to do for a career though.
Would your classmates be surprised by who you are now?
Not at all. I spent a lot of time with my boyfriend who is now my husband, so they all thought I’d marry him. I also received the child development department award my senior year and everyone knew I loved kids. They might be a little surprised that I own a cloth diaper company, but it would make sense to them that I’d do something like this.
Who were you before Wonderoos, any interesting jobs or schooling?
I worked for my grandparents florist, and did some floral design for a little while which I loved. I was also in the Army reserve. Graduating from basic training was a huge accomplishment for me. It was really difficult and I was homesick while I was there, but I was really proud of myself for graduating. I also graduated from my job training in the Army at the top of my class.
How did you get started cloth diapering and sewing your own diapers?
When I was pregnant with my daughter, I was online and found a forum about diapering. I read the messages there out of curiosity. Once I saw they were talking about cloth diapers, I was more intrigued and I looked into it. I was surprised by the modern choices available. I thought it would be fun to make some really tiny diapers for the baby and I started sewing.
What inspired you to create your business?
I was pregnant with my 3rd child... After trying every diaper I could get my hands on with my daughter, I wanted to simplify things and go with one simple diapering system. I was torn between investing in sized pocket diapers or in fitted one-size diapers with sized covers. I decided to create a diaper that would combine the features I loved about both styles and that’s how wonderoos began.
Did you run into any obstacles in starting it?
Many. I’ve had so many obstacles from finding wholesale sources for fabric to production delays and having shipping mix ups, but I think when starting any business you have to expect things will no always go as planned and try to know what your options are for any situation.
How did you come up with the name Wonderoos?
It took us weeks of brainstorming to think of a name. I chose Wonderoos because the “won” was like “one” for the one-size design and the “roos” was for the pocket concept like a kangaroo has a pocket so we ended up with wonderoos.
If you could do any kind of work you wanted, other than the business you now have, what would you be doing?
I would love to be a doula. I love everything surrounding birth; it is just a miraculous event. In any event I’d just love to be in a position where I felt I was able to make a difference for others.
What are your dreams for the future?
I would love to see my business help convert more mainstream parents into cloth diapering. I’d also love to be able to have enough success to send my children to college. Mostly I just want to be happy and have a happy family.
If you could have a day to yourself (kids could be cared for if you wanted, and you were all caught up with sewing), how would you spend it?
I’d love to spend day by myself at the beach. We don’t go to the beach often, but I love it there.
What's your favorite product from another WAHM?
Kim at Montana’s diaper store created Wonder-fulls one size hemp inserts to fit my Wonderoos and I really think those are awesome; I use them almost exclusively! I also really love baby bits soaps for making wipes solution. Those are a new favorite, but they are great and they come from Soaps by Denise.
Do you have any guilty pleasures that you will admit to?
I love getting a spa pedicure as often as I can!
What is your favorite dessert?
I have 2 and it is hard to choose between them. At home my favorite dessert is angel food cake with cocoa flavored cool whip like my great grandma used to make. At a restaurant though, my favorite is a chocolate chip calzone. It is chocolate baked into a pastry dough and covered with chocolate, real whipped cream and ice cream.
What is your favorite book?
I really love the Harry Potter series. I’ve read them all twice. I find that any book that can sweep you off into a magical place is bound to become a favorite. Reading can be a great little escape sometimes.
What is your proudest moment?
I think my proudest moment was giving birth to my first son. I worked so hard giving birth to him and he was over 9 lbs. I didn’t realize at the time what an awesome thing I’d just done. Later I really was amazed that I had done it though! My next 2 children came via c-section so it made me that much prouder that I was able to do that with him.
What is your favorite song?
My favorite song is “I hope you dance” by LeeAnn Womack. I was introduced to this song when my daughter was extremely ill in ICU at 3 months old. Now I can’t hear it without crying, but it is a reminder of how eternally grateful I am to have her each day and the dreams I have for her and my sons.
