When she got her first sewing machine over 20 years ago, she made quilts with squares that didn't line up. Inspired by the desire to stay home with her youngest child and her interest in cloth diapering, Cyn taught herself to sew professionally through trial and error (and pointers from other CuddleWAHMs). Now, she is an active member of the BabyByU WAHM community and has a living room full of fabric to boot!
How many children do you have and what are their ages?
I have four children and two step-children. Karri, 17, and Chad, 15, live with their mother and have been busy with school and work. Karri loves to read, studies astrology, and collects Care Bears. Chad doesn't go anywhere without his X Box and is accumulating quite a stash of video games. He is looking forward to owning (and driving!) his own car.
My oldest son is Kyle and he'll be turning 18 this month. He is an avid outdoorsman and has met the requirements for the rank of Eagle Scout. His free time is spent racing radio-controlled cars and trucks or helping his father restore a 1932 Ford truck.
Angela is 16 and graduated from high school in May 2003. She completed high school in 3 years and received Cum Laude honors. Angela is planning a career as a pharmacy technologist and will begin her training after enjoying the summer with friends.
My youngest daughter is Megan. She is 14 and begins high school in the fall. Megan is very interested in anything to do with the Titanic and has a bassett hound named Whitney. She loves animals and would like to be a veterinarian some day.
The baby of the family is our son, Aeden, who will turn one on July 3rd. He is full of laughter, learning, and unconditional love. Aeden has truly been the icing on the cake for me. :)
What is a funny or rewarding experience you've had as a mama?
Aeden joining us has enabled me to have the unique opportunity to teach our teenagers some parenting skills and they've also participated in his developmental milestones. I believe this will be a great asset to them when they are ready to begin families of their own.
What did you think you'd be when you grew up?
I wanted to be an architect so I could design a dream home for myself that totally surrounded a hidden garden courtyard.
Who did your classmates think you were in high school?
Our family had moved across town and I transferred to a new school just before 11th grade. Most classmates didn't know me well, but probably thought me to be shy and quiet. In reality I was a bit wild and spent many evenings cruising in my 1968 Mustang with older friends and dating my then, husband-to-be, who had already graduated from high school.
Would they be surprised by who you are now?
Yes, most of them have teenagers by now and would be surprised that I am back in baby-ville and loving it!
Are you married? How did you meet your husband?
I am married to Andrew and we met on my 36th birthday. He treated me to dinner at a Mexican restaurant that night and we talked for hours. I'm not sure if it was love at first sight... it may have been the margaritas, lol.
Who were you before Prairie Diapers... any interesting jobs or schooling?
I went to college as a non-traditional student and graduated when my older three children were all under 5 years of age. I'm a registered nurse with the majority of my experience being in Newborn Nursery, Neonatal ICU, Pediatrics, and Pediatric ICU.
How did you get started cloth diapering and sewing your own diapers?
During my pregnancy with Aeden, I decided I wanted to diaper him with cloth and it seemed natural to me to make them myself. I truly love all of the fabric selections that are available online!
Did you sew before you started cloth diapering?
Not really much at all... I took it up [again] because of my interest in cloth diapering... learning mostly by trial and error and from the pointers given to me by other CuddleWAHMs. They were wonderful in the support they offered.
How did you come up with the name Prairie Diapers?
I loved the "Little House on the Prairie" books when I was a young girl. In fact, I grew up on a farm in eastern South Dakota, not far from where Laura Ingalls lived. The name, Prairie Diapers, just seemed fitting to me.
What did your family say when you told them you were going to be an entrepreneur?
They thought I would dabble in sewing as a hobby and never dreamed that fabric upon fabric would eventually take over our livingroom!
If you could do any kind of work you wanted, other than the business you now have, what would you be doing?
I'd be running a home-based child care for children with medical needs. So many parents of special needs children get very little free time to themselves and find it almost impossible to secure qualified child care for them.
What are your dreams for the future?
To watch my children and grandchildren grow into responsible adults that ultimately make a difference in the world.
If you have time for hobbies, or outside interests, what are they?
Hiking, baking, writing, and shopping for fabric. :)
If you could have a day to yourself (hubby and kids could be cared for if you wanted, and you were all caught up with sewing), how would you spend it?
I would definitely hop on a plane to New York, see the Lion King, catch a taping of Emeril Live, and shop till I dropped, lol.
What's your favorite product from another WAHM?
A perfectly made HoneyBoy! diaper with a red windpro outer and a nautical print inner that I purchased from Naptime Kreations.
What's something that no one would ever guess about you?
That I study the religions of the world. I'm facinated by the differences (and similarities) in the spiritual belief systems of various cultures.
Anything else you think would be fun for others to know about you?
That I live where the Black Hills literally rumbles with thousands of motorcycles each August when the Sturgis Harley Davidson Motorcycle Classic comes to town.
