Behind the Diapers - Montana's Diaper Store

Kim Ormsby
Montana's Diaper Store

"You did a good job mama!" said Kaya to her mom, Kim Ormsby, but to which of Kim's many jobs was she referring? Kim has been a telecommunications engineer, a dog washer, a wildlife care provider, and "everything in between." She then built Montana's Diaper Store from a side job to the main source of income for her family. With all this business success, Kim was extremely proud of this compliment on her most treasured job - motherhood.

Are you married? What is your husband's name? How did you meet him? Was it love at first sight?
Yes, my husbands name is Duane. We met while we were both telecommunication engineers for a large corporation in Denver. No, I wouldn't say love at first sight, but we had an instant friendship that turned into love and a marriage!

How many children do you have and what are their ages? Please tell us something about each child.
Delaney is almost 7 and our little artist, Ashton is 4 and is in love with riding his bike and playing soccer, Kaya is 2 and the family comedian, and Teague is 8 weeks old and is constantly being fought over!

What is a rewarding experience you've had as a mama?
There are so many, but most recently it was a conversation I had with Kaya (our 2 year old). She was patting my belly and asking where the baby was....I told her that baby Teague used to be in my belly and now he is here with us.....She got a big grin on her face and said "You did a good job mama!" Those are the moments that you wish you could like to etch into your memory.

What did you think you'd be when you grew up?
A veterinarian.

Who did your classmates think you were in high school?
That is a toughy....a fairly typical high schooler....lots of friends, but didn't stand out in anything in particular.

Would your classmates be surprised by who you are now?
Yes.

Who were you before Montana's Diaper Store, any interesting jobs or schooling?
I've had so many jobs since high school. I've been a dog washer....a vet tech.....waited tables....sold insurance......a telecommunication engineer, and everything in between!!! I'd like to think that having so many experiences have only helped me be a better business owner.

What inspired you to create your business?
While pregnant with our second child, Ashton, I started researching cloth diapers. It was frustrating to see such a limited number of places to purchase them. I put together a business plan and with a small amount of money started our first online website.

Did you run into any obstacles in starting it?
Obstacles...MANY....it seems that there are constantly obstacles. You get over them, learn and move on!

What did your family say when you told them you were going to be an entrepreneur?
Honestly, I think they initially thought this would be a little "side job" while I stayed at home being a mommy. Within a year they realized it was much more. Within 3 years my husband left his stressful corporate career to work for our company!

You mentioned that your family thought that your store would just be a "side job." How successful did you think it would be?
I think I knew it would be successful, but just didn't know how quickly it would grow. I still feel like I haven't caught up!!

How did you get started cloth diapering and sewing your own diapers?
I started with Ashton, spent a TON of time online both reading and buying. Once I started using cloth diapers I discovered certain likes and dislikes. Trying so many diapers helped when creating our own products. I was able to find what diaper qualities worked best and put them into our own creations.

Do you have any advice for a WAHM just starting out (or someone who is considering becoming a WAHM)?
Plan on spending the first 6-12 months "building" your business, getting established. Don't get discouraged. Try to set a schedule to separate family time from work time. It isn't always possible and they often intertwine. Remember your a wife and mommy first!!

What's your favorite product from another WAHM/WAHD?
I LOVE Maria/Kiwi Pies, Jesse/Luxe Baby, and Christy/Fussybutt products. We've used their diapers on three of our babies. They've all now gone "hyena" but they are true artists and I truely appreciate how much time and energy they put into each of their products.

If you could have a day to yourself (spouse and kids could be cared for if you wanted, and you were all caught up with sewing), how would you spend it?
I would spend the morning hiking Hyalite Canyon, lunch at Nova Cafe, coffee and knitting in the afternoon at the Leaf and Bean.

What is your favorite sport to play? What is your favorite sport to watch?
Downhill skiing is what I enjoy most. I like watching Sunday football with my husband.

What one thing have you always wanted to try/do/learn, but have not had the time or resources to do?
Snowboarding, Duane and I took one lesson and were so sore we've never done it again. I really need to try it again!

What is your favorite book?
Kite Runner

What is your favorite television show?
Man vs Wild

What is your favorite movie?
The Color Purple

What is your favorite musical artist or band?
Allison Krause

What is your favorite sound?
My children laughing

What is one of your guilty pleasures?
COFFEE....I'll admit it...I'm a coffee addict.

Tell us about your most embarrasing moment or an unusual story from your life.
There are so many...LOL...With Teague my water broke while walking around the mall. Pretty embarrassing!

What is the farthest you have been from home?
I was an exchange student to Germany.

What place would you love to travel to?
New Zealand

What are your dreams for the future?
I look forward to growing our company with my husband and children. We plan on taking a year off and living abroad with our children so they can experience life outside of the United States.

What's something that no one would ever guess about you?
I went to college on a softball scholarship

Tell us anything else you think would be fun for others to know about you.
I'm a twin!
