Behind the Diapers - Granny's Ark

Pam Oswald and Wanda Reynolds
Granny's Ark

Cloth diapering is often a mom owned business, or sometimes it is opened by friends. In the case of Granny's Ark, it is both. Wanda and Pam are mother and daughter and best friends. When her twins were born, Pam discovered how cool cloth diapers had become since she last used them. Working together, Pam and Wanda designed the diapers for the twins that Wanda would sew. Now they have made a successful business, and are happy to share the shopping for fabric, sewing and design, and spending time with the kids and each other!

How many children do you have and what are their ages? Please tell us something about each child.
PAM: 5 children. Jake my first born who did not survive taught me to live each day as if it were my last. Michael is 13 and loves to draw; he is very creative. Ally, the first of my twins, is the most affectionate of my kids. Abby, second born twin, is my puzzle-doing drama diva. Mason is my chubby bubby baby.   WANDA: Two Children. Pam (36) and Joe Jr. (34). Pam of course works with me in Granny's Ark. Joe is a dad and an avid fisherman.

What is a funny or rewarding experience you've had as a mama?
PAM: It is so hard to choose just one, but I would say that watching my 13 year old help the twins build a lego castle while I watch with a sleeping baby in my arms. My life feels so full.   WANDA: As a mom, it has been too many years. As a grandmother, taking three of my grandchildren to Yellowstone Park (more than once). I'll make campers of them yet.

What did you think you'd be when you grew up?
PAM: A writer.   WANDA: A nurse.

Who did your classmates think you were in high school?
PAM: The shy girl.   WANDA: A brainy geek.

Would they be surprised by who you are now?
PAM: I don't know.   WANDA: I don't think they would be.

Are you married? What is your husband's name and how did you meet him? Was it love at first sight?
PAM: My husband is Don; everyone calls him Oz. We will be married 5 years in June. We met at a get together for a twin cities chat room on the internet. It was definately love at first sight for me. I loved his smile and laugh.

Who were you before Granny's Ark, any interesting jobs or schooling?
PAM: I was and am a Respiratory therapist. I took 1 and a half years off with the birth of the twins, and will be returning very part time in march.   WANDA: I work for a company that employs disabled individuals for 24 years.

How did you get started cloth diapering and sewing your own diapers?
PAM: I have cloth diapered all my children. With Michael, I used prefolds through a service and dappi wraps I got at Target. With the twins, we had the internet and I started searching. I was floored at how cool diapers were since I last CD'd 10 years ago. I knew my mom could sew so we set to work designing some diapers for the twins.   WANDA: We started when the twins were born. It was an attempt to find a daddy proof cloth diaper (no pins).

What inspired you to create your business? Did you run into any obstacles in starting it?
PAM: I loved our diapers and though others might like them as well. Our biggest obstacles were money and learning to fit a business in with my growing family.   WANDA: Lack of money was our biggest problem. Oh and too big tabs; they were huge.

What did your family say when you told them you were going to be an entrepreneur?
WANDA: I don't think anyone took it seriously. The number one reason was that they didn't believe anyone cloth diapered anymore.

How did you come up with the name Granny's Ark?
PAM: We wanted something that would tie in with the twins (Ark) and Granny's because my mom does all the pretty work, so I felt she should be credited somehow.

If you could do any kind of work you wanted, other than the business you now have, what would you be doing?
PAM: Life flight for Mayo Clinic.   WANDA: Only thing would be to spend more time traveling.

What are your dreams for the future?
PAM: To raise healthy happy children and have fun doing it.   WANDA: Do the Grand Canyon one more time. Only have to lose 100 pounds and I'm ready to go.

What is your favorite dessert?
PAM: French silk pie.   WANDA: Chocolate Pudding (with a skin).

What is your favorite book?
PAM: The Green Mile (One of the last I read).   WANDA: I read about a book every eight days so this would be impossible to chose.

Who is your favorite song?
PAM: "Over the Rainbow" by Judy Garland; we danced to this at our wedding.   WANDA: "Amazing Grace." I love music but can't carry a tune in a bucket.

What's your favorite product from another WAHM?
PAM: Breastfeeding and advocacy wear from Jack's Magic Beanstalk.   WANDA: Soaps from Jack's Magic Beanstalk.

If you have time for hobbies, or outside interests, what are they?
PAM: Walking, reading (Haven't had time to do this since before I had the twins), Cross stitch.   WANDA: I love camping and the outdoors.

If you could have a day to yourself (hubby and kids could be cared for if you wanted, and you were all caught up with sewing), how would you spend it?
PAM: Take a looooong bath, get in bed, and read a good book.   WANDA: I would love to go on another road trip to Yellowstone.

What's one thing you admire about the other person?
PAM: Her work ethic, some days she will sleep over at my house and get up as early as 4 am to start sewing before the kids get up to make sure people get their dipes in a reasonable amount of time.   WANDA: The thing I admire about Pam is her ability to overcome tough obstacles. Also the fact that she can find any time for Granny's and raise a teenager and 3 under 3 is amazing.
