Children have always been the main focus of Jennifer Nelson's life, first when she was a critical care nurse taking care of premature and sick babies in the neonatal ICU and now, having four-going-on-five of her own children. Having a successful cloth diaper business may seem so different from her past, and yet it's all part of caring for children, which is Jennifer's passion.
How many children do you have and what are their ages?
I have four children three boys and one girl ages 10,9,6,2 and one on the way in June. We don't know if it's a boy or a girl.
What is a funny or rewarding experience you've had as a mama?
Well you know in all honesty there are so many wonderful experiences that go along with being a mom. If I had to narrow it down I'd have to say it's so rewarding to see your own children thriving on an intellectual as well as social level. Children can sometimes surprise you and say things that make you wonder where they could have possibly learned something that deep or think of something so thoughtful; and then you realize, your personal relationship with your child is responsible for these things. It's a great feeling, one of the best rewards.
What did you think you'd be when you grew up?
For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to be either a veterinarian or a doctor. It's funny now when I think about where life's path has led me it's so close and yet so far from those things all at the same time.
Who did your classmates think you were in high school? Would they be surprised by who you are now?
I guess I have always been fortunate, I never really had the clique thing going on. I really had friends in all of the social spectrums. I'm not sure exactly which I fit into myself though lol! I guess they would tell you I was very independent and a hard worker, always determined. Would they be surprised by who I am now? I think so, I don't think anyone would have imagined that I would have so many children by now! That's probably what most of my high school friends would be shocked about and not the fact that I run a home based business. I think they would have expected something like that from me, I always wanted to be my own boss :)
How did you meet your husband?
My husband and I met while I was working as a neonatal intensive care nurse and he was doing his internship in pediatrics after medical school. He had a month long rotation in our ICU. We really just clicked during that rotation of his and after the month was over we started seeing each other outside of work once he rotated to a different unit. We have worked together in the past in the ICU since then but it's different now, lol, we can't act like we do at home. We have always laughed and joked a lot, something I love about our relationship.
Who were you before Cloth Baby... any interesting jobs or schooling?
You mean I had a different life before Cloth Baby? I'm just kidding, as I mentioned before, I am a CCRN which means that I am an RN with an extra certification in critical care. I guess it was my way of making it into a field which had a schedule that could support my wishes to become a mom and still give me the satisfaction of filling that intellectual need and desire to be in the medical field. It was the best of both worlds at the time. Then came the children and boy did things change lol! I've always loved taking care of babies and children, which is what drew me to NICU nursing and taking care of premature and sick babies in the neonatal ICU. It's the only kind of nursing I have ever done and I have always been passionate about my work whether it was nursing or making diapers. I must say that I am so thrilled to be able to work from home and be with my children.
What did your family say when you told them you were going to be an entrepreneur?
They were excited and supportive. My husband has been extremely supportive of my business endeavors all along. I think they know that my business is an extension of myself and that it is extremely important to me. They value and support what I'm passionate about. Although they can't stand it when the phone line is busy!
If you could do any kind of work you wanted, other than the business you now have, what would you be doing?
I'd have to say that would be working in a health clinic for mothers and babies in an underdeveloped country. Working alongside my husband and exposing our children to what life is like "out there" would be awesome. I mean our everyday life experiences in the United States have a way of making it difficult for children and even adults to appreciate the broader spectrum of unique and diverse lifestyles. Whether others are less fortunate than we are is really a personal opinion, and I want to be able to give my children the ability to appreciate that.
If you have time for hobbies, or outside interests, what are they?
Hobbies are something that I wish I had more time for honestly but life is pretty busy right now. I do enjoy running and biking. Something I hope to do more of after this baby is born. I have plans to train for a marathon in December.
What's your favorite product from another WAHM?
I love Joyce's hand painted clothing from elliebelly.com. Her designs are very modern, creative and lots of fun. There are a ton of other WAHM products that I love, but the list is too long I can't mention them all lol! There really is an immense amount of talent out there in the WAHM community.
What's something that no one would ever guess about you?
I am a purple fanatic! I love purple in any shade on anything! On a more serious note, I have to mention that I am a very active supporter of the Arthritis Foundation. Our beautiful two-year-old daughter has JRA or Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and her brave journey has given me more wisdom than I could ever express with words. I think once you are touched by something like this it changes you forever.
Anything else you think would be fun for others to know about you?
I'm going to learn to surf this summer. It's something I have always wanted to do. I just hope I survive all of the wipeouts that I'm headed for!
